“My temple” refers to the body. Yogananda writes for example: “I bow to the Spirit in the body‑temple”, and “Teach me to behold Thee hiding equally in the white, dark, yellow, red, and brown body-temples of all races”, and “My joys are blazing into bliss. My body-temple is filled with light.”
He explains the meaning of this Cosmic Chant in his Praecepta Lessons. He says:
“As King Janaka once said: ‘Who is in my temple today? I thought it was myself, but I see that the Infinite is here. The little self of the body and the bundle of bones are not me. It is the Infinite that is in my body. I bow to myself. I offer the flowers unto myself.’
You see, he saw the Infinite in himself – in his temple. That is why he put the flowers on himself. Some day that realization will come to you, and you will no longer think that you are a mortal or that you are a man or a woman, and just human.”
