The Cosmic Chants book (YSS) explains that this is an ancient Bengali song. It is called Jabe Ki He Din Amar. The original Bengali lyrics (in Latin characters) are:
Jabe kihe dino amar
Biphale caliye.
Achi natha dibanishi asapata nirokhiye.
Tumi tribhubana natha, ami bhikhari anatha.
Kemane baliba tomaya esa he mama hridaye.
Hridaya kutiro dwar
Khola acche anibar.
Kripa kore ekobar
Eshe ki jurabe hiye
This original Bengali text says “Tumi tribhubana natha, ami bhikhari anatha”, “You are the Lord of the universe, I am a beggar orphan.” Swami Kriyananda (who spoke Bengali) explained that Yogananda eliminated these words, singing the song a bit differently, because he taught never to pray to God like a beggar, but to firmly demand one’s birthright from Him, our Father. These are the words, then, which Yogananda chanted in Bengali:
Jabe kihe dino amar
Biphale bohye
Dibanishi achhi boshi asapata nirokhiye
Hridaya kutiro dwar
Khola acche anibar
Daya kore ekobar
Eshe ki jurabe hiye.
Yogananda explained the meaning of this Cosmic Chant, not only for meditation, but for our daily life. He says: “Along with periods of meditation you should think day and night of God. ‘Door of my heart, open wide I keep for Thee…night and day, night and day, I look for Thee night and day.’ We must uplift our consciousness so that even the most worldly duties are performed with the thought of God.” (Self-Realization Magazine, May 1954)
LYRICS:
Door of my heart
Open I keep for Thee
Door of my heart
Open I keep for Thee
Wilt Thou come, With Thou come
If for once Come to me
Wilt Thou come, With Thou come
If for once Come to me
Will my days fly away
Without seeing Thee my Lord
Night and day
Night and day
I look for Thee night and day.
